Thank you for your service to Swarthmore!

I am deeply grateful for my 35 years as the director of the Scott Arboretum & Gardens. In this position, I had the good fortune to meet and work with so many talented staff members, dedicated volunteers, loyal and generous members, and inspirational colleagues in public horticulture, who all passionately loved plants, gardens, and the events and programs that brought plants and people together. I had exciting opportunities over three decades to help shape the design and appearance of the campus, providing joy and horticultural enrichment in unique ways as a public garden and as a College campus that is free and open to all, at all hours. Established to serve the public, Scott Arboretum & Gardens is a unique and defining aspect of Swarthmore College, thanks to the vision and generosity of Edith Wilder and Arthur Hoyt Scott, who had this exceptional concept when it was established in 1929.

I had 24 years at Swarthmore College working with outstanding colleagues and amazing Scott Arboretum & Gardens volunteers. We worked as a team to keep beautiful grounds and collections of plants healthy and in good health for the staff, students, and visitors. It was a wonderful job and I was happy to contribute while making many friends. I will always look back on my time at the college fondly.

After 31 years of painting the campus, you make friends. A lot of you that I chatted with are friends especially all my friends in the Science Center. As far as painting goes, I looked forward to painting crosswalks and Adirondack chairs every year — yes the "Big Chair." I also had fun working with Public Safety during graduation at "The Rock," helping with parking , or in my case "No Parking." I will end with this — "Let's Go Flyers!"

I first started at the college as an administrative assistant in the Modern Languages Department. After five years, I moved to the Engineering Department and Environmental Studies Program as the administrative coordinator. I always enjoyed interacting with the Swarthmore students — they truly are amazing. After retirement, my husband and I have traveled extensively. I’m catching up on my reading and relaxing at the Jersey shore. I miss my colleagues at the College and hope to reunite sometime in the future.

Working in Financial Aid for over 25 years gave me the gift of working with many wonderful colleagues, students, and parents. I’m honored to have worked at Swarthmore and to have contributed to the success of the College. I’m enjoying spending time with my grandsons, parents, and family in retirement.
