Swarthmore College's Equal Opportunity Office

Swarthmore College founders Benjamin Hallowell, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Martha Ellicott Tyson, and Samuel Willets were committed to encouraging all learners to take individual responsibility for seeking and applying truth and for testing whatever truth one believes one has found. Such an environment is essential to the rigorous academic and social pursuits expected of each member of the Swarthmore College Community. In this tradition, today, Swarthmore College is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination, harassment and retaliation and fostering an inclusive and healthy community grounded in mutual respect, trust, engagement and accountability.

To that end, the Equal Opportunity Officer provides outreach, education and supportive consultation and response services to all members of the Swarthmore community.  The Equal Opportunity Officer is responsible for managing the prompt and caring response to all reports of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation relating to protected characteristics involving Swarthmore College community members.  Specifically, the Equal Opportunity Officer is responsible for the following, non-exhaustive, list of services:

  • Responding to faculty, staff, and student reports alleging discriminatory, harassing or retaliatory behavior based on protected identities.
  • Providing mandatory and optional education and training opportunities for all campus community members focused on preventing discrimination, harassment and retaliation or other conduct of concern.
  • Training of all designated employees and individuals involved in resolution of allegations.
  • Coordinating other departments and offices to offer religious supportive measures to faculty, staff and students, and disability accommodations to faculty and staff. Disability accommodations for students are coordinated by the Office of Student Disability Services.
  • Supporting departments and offices with hiring searches and recruitment and retention efforts.
