Education & Programs
Why should I request a training, discussion, facilitation or workshop?
"Educating the whole student" is a main tenant of Swarthmore Forward, the College's strategic plan. When it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion, ODEI believes everyone always has more to study. Whether you're a student, professional staff member or instructional staff member, you can benefit from taking one of our programs or scheduling one for your team.
According to the 2024 Campus Climate Survey, on average, 86% of faculty, 73% of professional staff, and 80% of students reported interacting with people who have different identities than their own on a daily or a weekly basis. Diversity on campus is a fact. Inclusion, however, is not so immutable. A culture of inclusion - one where every member of our campus community can meaningfully, authentically and fully participate - requires developing individual skills and the confidence to integrate them into our everyday behavior. A culture of inclusion ensures everyone is able to experience a community that is free of discrimination and harassment and promotes curiosity, resilience, empathy, inclusivity and accountability.
What kinds of training, discussions, facilitations and workshops do you offer?
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offer a wide range of training, discussions, facilitations and workshops. In addition to the options you can find on the Training & Education Menu page, we are also able to develop and tailor training to meet your participation and learning goals. Our office focuses on providing opportunities to learn about and practice concepts and skills aimed at preventing discrimination, harassment and retaliation and promoting inclusion and equity. These concepts and skills include understanding the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation, dialoguing across differences, cultural adaptability, recognizing and mitigating the impact of unintentional bias on decision-making and behavior, and others.
