Swarthmore Endorses the ‘Put a Price on It’ Campaign

In Fall 2016, Swarthmore President Valerie Smith was the second signatory of the Put A Price On It campaign's letter calling on elected leaders to take action on carbon pricing:

“As leaders of higher education institutions, we call upon our elected representatives to act collectively on behalf of current and future generations by putting a price on carbon. We work to prepare our students for thriving futures, over which climate change casts a dark shadow of uncertainty. Putting a price on carbon pollution is an indispensable step we can take to effectively combat climate change.”

President Smith went beyond that initial action by co-signing a letter with the presidents of Wesleyan, Pitzer, Dickinson, and Vassar. She shared the letter with more than 100 university and college presidents, asking them to join the campaign. Since then, an additional 32 schools have signed on to make an impact on state and national policy.

Swarthmore featured in ‘Years of Living Dangerously’ documentary

The Years of Living Dangerously documentary series, co-created by David Gelber ‘63, on the impacts of climate change visited Swarthmore’s campus and produced a video on our efforts (see bottom of page).

Swarthmore Hosts ‘Safe Climate PA’

Swarthmore helped to host the Safe Climate PA event in Harrisburg in October 2017. At the event, students had the chance to learn about climate change, carbon pricing, and how to engage with elected officials on these topics. Swarthmore worked with the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Council, Our Climate, and Citizens' Climate Education to host this event.
