Apply to be a Sustainability Advocate!

Sustainability Advocates visit the Kitchen Harvest compost facility on a chilly day.

Expectations of Advocates
  • Meet with the Associate Director of Sustainability over the summer to discuss project concepts.
  • Attend group meet and greet during Green Advisor Training Week - Date TBD.
  • Attend occasional one-on-one meetings with the Associate Director of Sustainability.
  • Meet 30 minutes weekly with their Green Advisor(s) throughout the academic year.
  • Develop and implement a year-long sustainability project with the Green Advisor(s). Support student project work throughout the year.

  • Continue to think more about sustainability in your life and your sphere of influence at Swarthmore!

Advocates will be asked to identify small-scale sustainability projects that can be realistically implemented during their time in the program. We ask that applicants come to the program with some idea of what they might want to work on for their department and be prepared to provide mentorship to the Green Advisor(s) for the entire academic year.

Benefits of being a Sustainability Advocate
  • Foster a sense of ownership, shared responsibility, and expertise with regard to the College's sustainability commitments.
  • Make significant sustainability improvements to campus operations.
  • Form personal connections with both students and other Sustainability Advocates.
2025-2026 Application Instructions

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE : July 1st, 2025

Application forms can be found here. Please note that the application is a Google Form and cannot be saved prior to submission. This application will also require you to submit a signed approval from your supervisor confirming their understanding of your Sustainability Advocates' commitment.

Submission of an application is not a guarantee of inclusion in the program. Sustainability Advocates and Green Advisors are matched based on needs and availability. You will be notified of your status several days after the application period closes at the latest.

There are several required meetings during the summer:

  • Meet with the Associate Director of Sustainability for 1:1 to discuss your project in July/August.
  • Meet and Greet with all Sustainability Advocates and student Green Advisors during Green Advisor Training in late August. Date TBD.

We recognize that these dates may not work for you due to work or vacation commitments, but our hope is that most applicants will be able to attend our Green Advisor Training in late August. It is imperative that the AY 25-26 Advocates cohort meets with the Associate Director of Sustainability and their Green Advisor(s) before the semester gets into full swing.
