First Math Class: Math 028: Linear Algebra with Theory
Taught by Professor Reinhart, this course was a fantastic introduction to proofs, even for an applied focused student. This was also one of my most collaborative courses.
Favorite Math Class: Math 054: Partial Differential Equations
Math 054 felt like being handed a key that unlocks the door into the real world. A challenging course, Partial Diff EQs rewards you by putting everything from finance to fluid dynamics at your fingertips.
Why math: Initially I wanted to be an engineering and biochemistry student. I believed that this would be the best way to pursue a career in biomedical engineering. However, math has always been at the core of my desire to engineer. I believe that translating numbers into solutions for people is a beautiful thing. The incredible faculty, and all the fun I had in math department courses, helped me remember my roots, and I decided it would be dishonest to myself to be anything but a math major.
Math after Swat: I would love to push medical technology forward by using computational math to model human systems.
Advice: Talk to your Math Professors (OHs, around campus, etc.)! The professors here CARE about you. They want you to succeed.
Anything else: Anyone can be a "math person." People often lump themselves into one of two categories: good or not good at math, "math person" or not. They base these on experiences on the problems they got correct, how well they did in classes, or what others said about their abilities. The truth is that all it takes to hold the title of "math person" is finding your way of enjoying the process, not any of the "results" you have gotten thus far. If you are someone who likes solving problems, improving the world in any way, there is a place in math for you.
