Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of temporary work authorization for practical training that is directly related to your major and integral to your degree at Swarthmore.

Swarthmore College offers two types of CPT:

  1. CPT is available when practical training is a required component of a course in the Swarthmore catalog, or when this training falls within an acceptable format of instruction.
  2. CPT will be available for summer internships, other non-required work or volunteer opportunities, when deemed integral to a student’s academic program.  International  Students will receive one-tenth of a credit for the paid or unpaid internship registered on their transcripts. Similarly, CXPL credit may be awarded upon request for domestic students in certain cases.

CPT is not available during Winter Break. Additionally, CPT can not be used for micro-internships, such as SwatWorks during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Eligibility

Students may be eligible for CPT if they have:

  • Completed one academic year (or two semesters) in F-1 status
  • An approved major (not General Studies)
  • Registered for the relevant class associated with their CPT opportunity. The start date of your position must fall within the duration of the class term.
  • Maintained good academic standing and their F1 status

All students must attend a CPT Workshop prior to applying. Workshops will be held each semester.
