"If you're ever feeling stressed or overwhelmed: Take a walk! We go to school on a gorgeous campus that can have a calming effect, and I know I've used our surrounding nature to help ease my worries throughout my college life!"

Stay Organized

  • Planning ahead can be crucial to feeling confident and avoiding overwhelming work piling up! You can use Google apps such as Calendar or Keep  to stay organized and write down goals, or a paper agenda if you prefer hard copies.
    • Keeping a calendar specifically can help you manage both classwork and personal time. Instead of exclusively planning out schoolwork, make sure your days are balanced with wellness activities, hobbies, and personal time.

Activities on Campus

  • Clubs are plentiful here at Swarthmore! Visit the Living at Swarthmore webpage to learn more about clubs and activities.
    • Email the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) at ose@swarthmore.edu for club/organization leadership contact info.
  • Access to Fitness is also a priority for the college. Outside of fulfilling PE credits, students can visit the Matchbox Fitness Center. You can find the hours of operation for the semester at this link here
    • Additionally, the Matchbox plays host to group exercise classes taught by both coaches and students are available to all. For those looking for a more social workout experience, these are a great option!
    • Intramural sports are a more competitive option for those looking to get active. From Pickleball to Basketball, Swarthmore Recreation and Wellness runs several coed leagues throughout the year for people of all identities to enjoy.
    • Wellness through curriculum is present at Swarthmore as well.
    • “Nature Rx: Wellbeing and the Natural World” (ENVS 015):

The course explores a range of ways that spending time in nature contributes to human health and well-being, from lowering blood pressure and stress hormone levels to enhancing immune system function, reducing anxiety, and improving mood.1

      • “Movement For Wellness” (DANC 058)

This course aims to teach Movement for Wellness from various entry points to create the potential for understanding our bodies, and how and why they move.2

  • “Wellness Seminar” (PHED 040)
    • The goal of the Wellness Seminar is to help students engage in the proactive process of becoming aware of and making choices for a more successful existence by providing an interesting and relevant program that will provide students with a base of knowledge that promotes a healthy balance of mind, body, and spirit.3
  • Becoming one with nature can help ease the stress that can come with Swarthmore academics. Remember, we live in an arboretum! The Scott Arboretum frequently holds events for those looking to get in tune with the world around us.

    • This coalition is responsible for much of the programming regarding wellness on campus! Coalition members Joshua Ellow and Ashley Netanel (Coalition Co-Lead) are the instructors of the aforementioned ENVS 015 and PHED 040 respectively.
