Shinjoo Cho


Bandoneonist, pianist, and accordionist Shinjoo Cho began her music studies at age five in Korea and continued her music development in tango, chamber, and improvised music in the US and Argentina. Shinjoo collaborated with international music, dance, and film makers in multi-disciplinary projects and performed on notable stages and festivals in the North America, Latin America, and Korea. Shinjoo participated in the Marlboro Music Festival under the baton of Leon Fleisher, appeared as a guest soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, and performed with tango orchestras at the Lincoln Center summer concert series.

During her 2014-2016 residency in Argentina, some of Shinjoo’s notable performances included appearing as a solo pianist for the president of Argentina at the inauguration of Centro Cultural Kirchner, a Teatro Colón debut with Branford Marsalis Quartet, and participation in Diego Schissi’s Música Maestra ensemble at Centro Cultural Kirchner Symphonic Hall.

Her recent projects include creating and producing Lo que vendrá, a retrospective and marathon concert of Astor Piazzolla’s music presented by Esperanza Arts Center, and composition for film and radio, such as the Lewis Latimer documentary and WHYY’s Route 47: Historias Along a Bus Route. Currently, she is a member of Oscuro Quintet (Philly) and Abaddon Sextet (NY) and teaches bandoneón and tango ensemble at Swarthmore College.

 

Abaddón 


Abaddón embodies the tradition of tango sextet that represents the height of tango ensemble playing with repertoire spanning the works of  Sexteto Mayor, Osvaldo Pugliese, Anibal Troilo, Raul Garello, and Astor Piazzolla. Formed in 2016 by notable tango musicians based in NY and Philadelphia, Abaddon has performed at St Peter's Church, Argentine Consulate, Bronx World Film Festival, Hudson Valley Tango Festival, Glen Echo Park in Washington DC, and Atlanta Argentine Arts & Culture Festival, among others. The members are Shinjoo Cho and Leandro Ragusa on bandoneons, Sergio Reyes and Ina Paris on violins, Emilio Teubal on piano, and Pablo Lanouguere on bass and they remain active as performers, composers, and coaches in tango and contemporary music in the US and Argentina.

Abaddón will perform a Lunch Hour Concert in Parrish Hall on Monday, October 3rd at 12:30pm.  Shinjoo Cho will continue to coach Swarthmore's student tango group and will perform with the ensemble throughout the year.   Abaddón will perform alongside the Swarthmore student tango group in a workshop and performance in March, 2023.
