Music Minor

Requirements of the Music Minor.  

Prerequisites for acceptance as a music minor: students should have completed a minimum of MUSI 002B and MUSI 011/040A OR MUSI 011A/040A and one Music History/Ethnomusicology course to be considered as a music minor.

Music History and Literature:1One music history course from the department's offerings: MUSI 020(W), 021(W), 022(W), 023(W).  Additional upper level history course with approval of the Dept Chair.
Ethnomusicology:1One ethnomusicology course from the department's offerings: Music 002A, 002C, 003, 003C, 005A, 006D, 007A, 007C, 008B, 009B, 010, 100, or 109.  Additional courses with approval of the Dept Chair.
Ensemble:2 semestersOrchestra, Wind Ensemble, Chorus, Garnet Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Chinese Music Ensemble, Taiko, Gamelan, Critical Mass
Elective:2TWO electives of your choice (may include Dance or Theater with Department Chair approval). One of these must be a designated "upper level" course (any one-credit course numbered  MUSI 012 or higher; see list below). 
Additional Requirement: Keyboard skills: This requirement can be fulfilled by completing MUSI 012 & 040B. One semester of Music 48 in piano will also fulfill this requirement. Students who do not complete Music 012 / 040B or who have not had piano instruction should see the Chair to discuss another path to fulfilling the keyboard skills requirement.

Credit/No Credit Policy


Courses taken during the first semester of the first year are taken CR/NC for all students.  After that semester, students minoring in music may elect to take one music course, of the student's choosing and without restrictions, as CR/NC to count towards the minor (with a recorded grade of CR).
