Linda received a travel award to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Phoenix, Arizona from November 1st to 4th. She presented a poster entitled "Biophysical and structural studies of telomeric DNA with a small molecule ligand as an anticancer strategy" and received the Biochemistry Presentation Award.

In October, the lab attended the 2017 Philadelphia Inorganic Colloquium hosted by Swarthmore College. Liliya was part of the organizing and coordinating team; Allan, Barrett, Deondre, Irene, Linda and Samantha presented posters.

Samantha represented the lab at the “Cracking the Repetitive DNA Code” Genetics Society of America Early Career Scientist Symposium at New York University, and presented a poster.

During Fall break, Linda and Samantha attended the Minisymposium on Analytical Ultracentrifugation at University of Pennsylvania on October 17. Barrett and Deondre visited our collaborator Brad Chaires and his lab at University of Louisville in Kentucky on October 16 - 19, read more about their trip on this BLOG

In September, the lab attended the 2017 Swarthmore  College Sigma Xi Student Research Poster Session and the 2017 Haverford Undergraduate Research Symposium. Allan, Barrett, Deondre, Linda and Samantha presented posters, while Linda gave a talk at the symposium, titled "Interaction of telomeric DNA with N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX as an anticancer strategy".

In August Allan, Barrett, Deondre and Linda went to the 254th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in Washington, DC. Barrett and Deondre gave oral presentations and presented posters, while Allan and Linda presented posters. Read more about their experiences on this BLOG

Our lab hired Samantha Nyovanie, recent Amherst graduate, as Research Assistant. Samantha is coming on July 17 and we are very excited to welcome her to our lab

Barrett Powell and Deondre Jordan represented the lab at G4thering: 6th International Meeting on Quadruplex Nucleic Acids, Prague, Czech Republic on May 31 - June 3. Both presented posters. To read more about their adventures, go here.

Congratulation to Liliya on her recent NIH R15 grant which started on June 1st, 2017

Barrett and Liliya attended March for Science in Washington DC on April 22. It was rainy and cold, but the gathering was very inspiring! Go Science!

Deondre and Barrett are on their way to The 6th International Meeting on Quadruplex Nucleic Acids which will take place on May 31st-June 3rd in Prague, Czech republic.

Congratulation to Thomas, Barrett, and Supriya for publication of their article: "Lowering the overall charge on TMPyP4 improves its selectivity for G-quadruplex DNA”  in Biochimie.

Deondre Jordan received travel award to attended Annual Biomedical Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). ABRCMS is a professional conference that brings together underrepresented students who plan to pursue a career in STEM. Deondre presented a talk titled:“Investigating the secondary structure of non-canonical DNA implicated in Cancer”. He was recognized for the excellent of his presentation with the Biochemistry award.

Liliya receives Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award for her work titled: Deciphering the Structure and Dynamics of Quadruplex DNA and DNA-ligand complexes.

In September the lab welcomes two new group member, Letitia Ho '19 and Allan Gao '19.

In September  Barrett, Irene, Sayed and Deondre presented their research at Swarthmore Sigma Xi poster session at Swarthmore as well as at Undergraduate Science Research Symposium at Haverford.

In August Liliya, Barrett, Irene, Sayed and Deondre went to the 252nd ACS National meeting. Liliya and Barrett gave oral presentations while Sayed, Irene, and Deondre presented posters. 

In July the whole lab (Liliya, Amber, Barrett, Deondre, and Sayed) went to Louisville to meet the lab of Brad Chaires. We had two  exciting and wonderful days of intense research collaborations. We learned how to run AUC, ITC, Stop-flow, and computer modeling, and got excellent data. Read more about our Louisville trip here.

Liliya, Amber, Barrett, Deondre, and Sayed began ten weeks of summer research in the Yatsunyk lab on May 31.

Our lab attended the third Philadelphia Inorganic Colloquium (PIC-3) on March 19 at the U. of Delaware (http://sites.temple.edu/picsite).  Thomas Ruan presented a poster titled: "Interactions Between G-Quadruplex DNA and Porphyrin Ligands"; Alice, Sayed, and Barrett presented their poster titled: "Interactions Between Non-canonical DNA and Ligands".

Michelle was awarded the prestigious SURF (summer research fellowship) award from the American Chemical Society, Division of Organic Chemistry. Congratulations Michelle!

Steven got accepted to every graduate school he applied to and finally decided on Stanford!!!! Congratulations Steven!

Navin and Michelle attended the Thomas Jefferson University Sigma Xi Research day in Philadelphia, PA, on April 17, 2013. Michelle presented a poster entitled Synthesis and preliminiary characterization of polyamide derivatives of protoporphyrin-IX and mesoporphyrin-IX, and Navin presented a poster called N-methyl mesoporphyrin-IX as a sensitive reporter of strand orientation in guanine quadruplexes.

Jack received NSF Graduate Fellowship and NDSEG Graduate Fellowship from the Department of Defense in March 2013. Now he has to choose.

 

2012 Archives

Our lab attended Swarthmore Sigma Xi poster session on October 26-27, 2012, and presented three posters focused on our summer research.

Our lab presented posters at the Haverford Undergraduate Research Symposium on September 22, 2012. Steven and Michelle gave an oral presentation regarding their research on the crystal structure of the NMM-Tel22 complex and the synthesis of novel amide porphyrin derivatives to students and faculty at the event.

Alessandro d'Urso (Ale) of the University of Catania visited the Yatsunyk lab on September 15, 2012 and presented his research on inducing chirality in porphyrin-DNA complexes. Lab members also gave short presentations and discussed exciting collaborations with Ale's lab.

Our lab attended the 244th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, on August 19 - 23, 2012. Vienna and Navin presented a poster titled "Investigation of the Interaction between DNA and Stabilizing Metallic Compounds" and Steven, Michelle, and Jack presented "Structural aspects of the interaction between human telomeric G-quadruplexes and N-methyl-mesoporphyrin IX."

Farewell to Jack, who just graduated with high honors. He is on his way to Harvard, where he will start as a PhD student in the department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Good luck!
