Swarthmore Innovation Fellows (SwIF)

UIF 2024

Swarthmore Innovation Fellows (SwIF) work together in cohorts of 3-4, using design thinking skills to develop innovative solutions to campus challenges. Students participate in training on design thinking, project management, teamwork, qualitative data collection and more. This training is applied in stakeholder interviews, prototyping, and testing for collaborative problem solving.

SwIF is open to all actively enrolled students no matter their discipline and experience level! Cohorts are selected to have a diverse range of skillsets and experiences.

The fellowship is a year-long commitment broken down into three distinct phases:
  1. Learning/Skill Building (Early Fall) - Weekly training with a focus on Design Thinking, as well as systems thinking, project management, specific skills development like interviewing, qualitative research, teamwork, and more.
  2. Ground Work (Mid/Late Fall) - Once an issue is identified, Fellows focus on qualitative data collection and ecosystem mapping to understand the challenge via interviews, surveys and focus groups.
  3. Implementation (Spring Semester) - In the spring, Fellows focus on developing a prototype (which can be an event, app, document, etc.) to test and collect feedback on.

Design thinking is not a linear process and this structure is is a starting point. Cohorts may move through the process in various ways.
