Equitable Access and Compliance

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion advances Swarthmore College's commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community through a wide range of programs, partnerships, and initiatives. Among its many functions, the Office is also home to the College's Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Coordinator, whose work is described below.

Equal Opportunity and Title IX

The Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Coordinator develop and implement best practices in education, response, and support, and provide campus-wide leadership on the policies, laws, and regulations governing sexual misconduct, discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics, and related retaliation.

In this capacity, the Office oversees and enforces two key College policies, which apply to all students, faculty, and staff:

  • The Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation
  • The Title IX and College-Defined Sexual Misconduct Policy

This work includes:

Education

  • Sharing information with students, faculty, and staff about equal opportunity and civil rights laws, related College policies, and the procedures that support them
  • Training members of the campus community on their rights and responsibilities under these laws and policies

Response

  • Monitoring the College's compliance with equal opportunity and civil rights laws and related College policies
  • Assisting in responding to inquiries from federal and state agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights
  • Offering options for resolving complaints of sexual misconduct, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, including formal investigations, negotiated resolutions, and educational interventions, as appropriate

  • Connecting members of the campus community with supportive measures, accommodations, and resources
  • Partnering with offices across the College on initiatives and activities that foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in our community
