I write to share instructions on how to access your new Swarthmore email account and complete the new student forms in mySwarthmore.
Please follow the instructions under the “TO DO” sections to set up your Swarthmore email account and complete the new student forms by June 1. Your Swarthmore username is listed at the bottom of this message. Your Student ID number will be provided to you in a separate email today.

If you have any questions about setting up your Swarthmore network or email account, email the College’s Helpdesk at support@swarthmore.edu. If you have general questions and are not sure who to ask, please email new_student_question@swarthmore.edu.
In July, we will share information about academic placement exams and housing assignments. We look forward to welcoming you to campus for new student orientation, which begins on August 26.

TO DO: set up your Swarthmore network and email account
Network Account and Student ID Number
- Network Account: Your Swarthmore College Network account gives you access to your College email and allows you to complete most of your new student forms online. By activating your Swarthmore account, you agree to abide by the Swarthmore College Acceptable Use Policy and the Copyright Policy in the Student Handbook.
- Student ID Number: Your Student ID Number uniquely identifies you in our system and can be useful to you for a variety of reasons. Treat your student ID number as securely as you treat other confidential numbers and identifiers.
Please also read the following policies:
- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Higher Education Act (HEA)
- Photography and Film Release Statement: Swarthmore College does not collect release forms from its students, faculty, or staff members for the use of images or films taken in public campus spaces.
Two-factor authentication
Swarthmore College has partnered with Duo to provide added security to our community’s user accounts. By utilizing this additional security measure when logging into your Swarthmore resources, you and the rest of our community will be better protected against having data accessed by unauthorized source.
You will be automatically enrolled in Duo when you create your Swarthmore account. When you log into your account for the first time, you must complete the device registration process. You will need to use a laptop or desktop computer and have a device ready to register to complete your device registration and finish your Duo enrollment. You can find more detailed information on how to register with Duo on our Knowledge Base.
Set up your Swarthmore network account
- Visit password.swarthmore.edu and click the “Claim Your Identity” link at the bottom of the login screen.
- Enter the username and student ID number provided to you by the College. Click “Submit.”
- You will be asked to review and agree to the Swarthmore College Acceptable Use Policy. A link will be provided for review. Once done, check the box to agree to the terms and click “Next.”
- Enter at least one recovery option, but both are recommended. After you enter the option(s), click “Update.” The options include:
- A non-Swarthmore email address
- A non-Swarthmore mobile phone number
- Enter Verification PIN sent to your recovery email/phone
- Set up your Duo two-factor authentication device registration.
- You will be asked to enter a password. When you click into the text field, the requirements for setting a password at Swarthmore will show as a dropdown window below the text field. As you fulfill the requirements, they will automatically be checked on the list. Once you have a password that passes the checklist, re-enter it in the field below to confirm it. Click “Next.”
- You will see a confirmation screen that you have completed the process to claim your account. Click “Complete.”
Once your account is successfully claimed, you can use your username and new password to log in to your Swarthmore email via Swarthmore Gmail.
If you have any issues or questions regarding claiming your account or setting up DUO, please email our Information Technology Services Helpdesk at support@swarthmore.edu or call 610-328-8513.
