Summer Social Justice Institute

The Haverford and Swarthmore College 2025 SSJI participants, student leaders, and staff
The Summer Social Justice Institute (SSJI) is a pre-Orientation program that incoming first-year students apply to participate in alongside a cohort of selected Haverford students. The program focuses on the below goals:
- Connect incoming students with a small group of their peers
- Provide mentorship from peer leaders to aid in the transition to college
- Reflect on and develop skills for working toward a socially just world
- Build connections between Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges
Participation in SSJI means embarking on a journey of self and world exploration with an intentional cohort of 20 other incoming first-year students, a handful of returning student leaders, and a whole host of staff who are here for first-year students and their transition to college. All first-year students are welcome to apply when the application opens. Below are details about the application and program timeline:
- May - June: The college will email incoming students with info on how to set up their Swarthmore email account & network access and how to complete new student forms in mySwarthmore and Moodle. The website, mySwarthmore, is the online hub for student life and Moodle is the site for student learning and course information. This is also the location of the application for SSJI, one of several pre-Orientation offerings.
- June: Offers will be shared with selected participants, who will then confirm their intended participation. This communication will include specific dates and times for the program so that participants can begin making travel plans.
- August: Information about check-in will be sent to participants in early August. Move-in typically happens the day before the program begins, which is in late August, a few days before Orientation begins.
