Employee Safety Commitee

Purpose

The purpose of the safety committee is to support Swarthmore College (“College”) employees and other community members in achieving and maintaining a safe, healthful environment.

Goal

The goal of the safety committee is to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses by involving employees and others in identifying hazards that can lead to injuries and illnesses, and implementing steps to eliminate those hazards or mitigate their effects.

Objectives

The committee has 6 primary objectives:

  • Promptly review all safety-related incidents, particularly injuries and accidents, with a commitment to identify root causes and take measures to prevent recurrence.

  • Identify workplace hazards through direct observation by committee members as well as reports from others, recommend means for eliminating or controlling these hazards, and engage partners and resources as needed for this purpose.

  • Establish procedures to ensure follow-up and closure for all safety incident investigations, hazard identifications, and committee-recommended corrective actions.

  • Collectively represent and act on behalf of a diversity of job functions, activities, environments, and challenges.

  • Provide additional means for employee safety awareness and involvement in achieving a safe, healthy working environment.

  • Fulfill requirements to maintain Certified Safety Committee status, as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, and support the implementation of safety recommendations from insurers and other relevant authorities and advisors.
