Student Advisory Group in Engineering

Mission Statement

SAGE is intended to be a sustainable leadership structure with the mission of enabling the Engineering department to better support its students, including those from historically underrepresented groups and other marginalized populations. The main function of SAGE is to make the Engineering department an open and welcoming environment for students regardless of background. Additionally SAGE will provide Engineering students with transparency and greater insight into the operations of the department, as well as represent the interests and concerns of Engineering students to faculty and staff.

The SAGE Constitution further defines our functions, organizational structure, and membership.

ENGINEERING SIBLINGS PROGRAM
Through the big-little sibling program, we plan to create spaces to meet peers, make friends, share advice, ask for honest experiences, and have fun.

Paolo Bosques-Paulet (he/him)

Hi everyone! I am a senior from Humboldt County, California, and I am interested in biomedical engineering and computational modeling in human biology. I have done research on the mechanics of the thumb with Professor Towles and am working with Professor Nakao in the math department on low-rank tensor algorithms for PDEs. I enjoy captaining Swarthmore club rugby, lifting at the Matchbox, and playing wind instruments. Say hi if you see me around!

Devin Malhotra (he/him)

Hey Everyone! My name is Devin Malhotra and I’m a senior from Charlottesville, VA. I am majoring in engineering and applied mathematics with interests in environmental and electrical engineering, and renewable energy. In my free time I like to watch sports, tour all the grub in Philly, and discover new music. I also play for the club rugby team. Elisabeth O’Connor (she/her)

Hey, I’m Elisabeth :) I’m a senior from Garnet Valley, PA, and am pursuing civil/structural engineering, with a lot of interest in creative and convenient design solutions as well as aesthetic design. My favorite class outside of engineering was Set Design last Spring! I have experience as a research assistant in the Wood Mechanics Lab here with Professor O’Donnell as well as a Structural Design Intern this past summer. I also captain the varsity softball team, and love listening to musical soundtracks on repeat, singing in the car, and taking long walks around campus. Don’t hesitate to say hello or ask me anything, engineering-related or not, if you see me out and about!

Alyson Goldbacher

Hi I’m Alyson Goldbacher. I am from Mount Laurel, NJ. I am majoring in engineering with an interest in biomedical and electrical applications. I’ve had internship experience in aerospace/electrical engineering. Besides SAGE, I am a proud member of SWE. I am a member of the varsity track and field team at swat, I run the 400m and pole vault! I am also a super big Philadelphia Eagles fan! In my free time I like to read!

Vanessa Gonzalez-Rychener

Hi! I’m Vanessa, and I’m a junior from Pittsburgh. I’m interested in the applications of engineering to renewable energy, primarily within mechanical and materials engineering. Within the engineering department, I’m a Wizard for E59, I do research in Professor Loh's materials engineering lab, and I'm part of the ASCE Sustainable Solutions team. I’m also a Photon for Energy and Sustainability, and I help run a STEM and environmental justice after school program with the Good Energy Collaborative.

Thomas Shelton

Hello there! I’m Thomas, and I’m a junior out of Silver Spring, MD. I’m interested in Biomedical, civil, and aerospace engineering. I am also currently building my own electric guitar from scratch (ask me if you want to see photos!!!).

When not doing engineering, I love participating in theater shows or playing music and sports. I am a founding member of the universally acclaimed rock band Arrogance and have partaken in various theatre performances, such as “The Swarthmore Orientation Play.” I co-captain the rugby team (go Evil Buzzards!) and fence sabre on the fencing team. I love the Star Wars movies, rooting for the Washington Commanders, and cheering on the Irish Rugby team. Feel free to drop by and say hi if you see me on campus!

Sage Hofmann

Hi all! I’m Sage, originally from Colorado but I’ve moved eight times since then. I’m a sophomore pursuing electrical and biomedical engineering. I’m a wizard for E11 and a manager at Swaudio where I’ve been spending a lot of time taking apart and fixing speakers and lights lately. I love doing random jobs such as designing sound systems for churches and driving an icecream truck. In all the free time I definitely have I’m a member of SwatRocks and play the tuba!

Liam Singleton

Hey everyone! My name is Liam Rose Singleton, and I am a sophomore. Currently, I am exploring materials engineering, however I am not set in stone. Outside of engineering, I am a Stage Manager for the theater department, I write/edit/produce my own films, and I am also Drama Board co-chair!

You will regularly find me in Singer or Cornell doing homework, backstage in LPAC, outside on a plane of grass, or by emailing me (feel free to reach out with any questions!!)

Shahed Obeidallah

Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore from northern New Jersey, majoring in Economics and minoring in Engineering and Mathematics. My interest in engineering actually started with Formula 1 and wanting to understand how the cars worked, so I’m very excited for when I get to take Mobile Robotics! In addition to SAGE, I’m on the board of MSA and a witness on the Mock Trial team. In my free time, I love trying new cafes, building Legos, going to NYC, and playing board games with my family and friends. Feel free to say hi if you see me on campus!
