Engineering Professional Development Funding
What We Fund
The Engineering department provides supplementary funding for existing funding sources on campus, and/or opportunities for students to attend professional development opportunities for which funding sources are not otherwise available. In circumstances where funding sources exist on campus, the Engineering department may supplement funding from those other sources if the amount of funding is not sufficient for the student(s) to attend the opportunity (for example, a conference with a particularly expensive registration fee or one that involves more than three nights of accommodations). In circumstances where existing funding sources are not available (for example, a new student group that is not yet eligible for funding), the department will consider proposals for full funding on a case by case basis.
Eligibility
Any student who is currently enrolled in an Engineering course or is an accepted Engineering major or minor is eligible for this funding. In order to be eligible for funding, students must apply for funding from other sources first (where applicable). For clubs, this must include the Student Budgeting Committee. For individuals, this must include the Provost’s office and Sigma Xi, if applicable. Students should note that there may be other funding sources available, for example through the First Generation Low Income (FLI) Office, the Lang Center, or through the Center for Innovation and Leadership (CIL).
How To Apply
Student groups or individuals looking to apply for funding from the Engineering department should email the department chair with the following information:
- a brief description of the opportunity including the name of the event, dates of the event, who is interested in attending, and whether this is an individual or student group affiliated opportunity
- a statement describing the funding sources applied for, funding obtained, or an attestation that no funding is available for the opportunity
- a budget that outlines the request for funding from the department, categorized by funding category (food, accommodation, registration, transportation, etc.), including a per student and total cost for the opportunity
Proposals will be evaluated by the department chair or their designee, with consultation of the rest of the department as needed. Students should expect to hear back about an opportunity within one to two weeks, but are encouraged to contact the department well in advance of events in the interest of financial responsibility.
