First math class at Swarthmore: My first math class at Swat was Real Analysis with Pat! A very challenging but rewarding experience that was well worth the effort.
What is your favorite math class and why? My favorite math class that I've taken at Swat is the Riemannian Geometry seminar with Ralph. As an astrophysics major, this class was super interesting, as the material serves as the mathematical basis for Einstein's theory of gravity. I also really enjoyed the seminar style of learning, and thought that it was fun to learn the material from my classmates!
Why did you become a math major? I came into Swat anticipating that I'd be an astrophysics and math major, largely because of how much I enjoy this style of problem solving. Once I took a few courses in the department, I was totally sold on being a major and exploring everything we have to offer.
How do you expect to use your mathematics after leaving Swarthmore? ? After leaving Swat, I anticipate that I'll be using mathematics frequently while doing astrophysics research of some sort. Math and theoretical physics are incredibly closely linked, and I'd like to become well acquainted with both fields so that I can bring a broad perspective to my work.
What advice do you have for an incoming student? I would tell an incoming student to really take advantage of the breadth of courses in the department. I've found that I've attained invaluable skills from classes with very different flavors of problem solving, all across the different branches (applied, stats, and "pure"). Also, take advantage of opportunities to go to office hours and get to know your professors better!
