First math class at Swarthmore:  Math 015

What was your favorite math class and why?  My favorite math class was Linear Algebra. I think we were all a little scared going into the class because of all the stories we've heard from past students. But Professor Hsu knows how to make a classroom feel like a community. It was very fun hearing her commentaries at the beginning of the class period and solving the problems together as a class. I got to speak to everyone in the class at least once. I met amazing people who became friends and helped me grow in my math journey. The class also taught me patience and made me value the tediousness as well as the application of math.

Why did you become a math major?  I was placed into the lowest math level when I came to Swat, and I went to Laura Dandridge and said, "I would really like to take Math 015. Is there a way I can still take it?" I was able to take it, but with extra help provided and mandatory office hours with Laura. I began to see math differently. Before college, it felt like a burden every student had to carry, but having professors who care more about your understanding of the subject really elevates your experience. I kept taking math classes after that, and I never stopped.

How do you expect to use your mathematics after leaving Swarthmore?   To be honest, I am not exactly sure. The world is my oyster with mathematics (or so people say). Nevertheless, if I do not end up using math directly, I plan to apply the skills and approaches to life that I have acquired from doing math over the years.

What advice do you have for an incoming student?  Just because it is hard doesn't mean you can't do it. Don't let other people's perception of what is define your own limits, especially when it comes to mathematics.
