Study Abroad

German Studies majors and minors are strongly encouraged to study abroad as part of their undergraduate experience. Students can spend a summer, one semester, or a full year of study abroad. Semester abroad programs are administered by the Global Engagement office, whereas credit transfers from summer abroad programs have to be arranged through the GMST program and the Registrar’s office.
Credit Transfer:
- All students who wish to receive German Studies credit for courses in German languages, literatures and cultures taken abroad must consult with the German Studies section head before departure and upon return to be eligible for pre-estimation and final transfer credits.
- In addition, students who wish to major/minor or are approved majors/minors in German Studies, need to enroll in one additional course in GMST at Swarthmore upon return to qualify for a transfer credit from abroad.
- Approved programs include:
- Bard in Berlin
- Berlin Consortium for German Studies
- Dickinson in Bremen
- Duke in Berlin
- American Junior Year at Heidelberg University
- Macalester in Berlin and Vienna
- Smith College in Hamburg
- Tufts in Tübingen
- Wayne State in Munich
Faculty in German Studies can advise on additional programs in German-speaking countries.
Study Abroad Funding
The German Studies program offers financial support for German majors and minors studying abroad. To be eligible students should have declared or be in the process of becoming German Studies majors or minors.
- Hilde Cohn Fund Student Fellowship Endowment was established in 2007 by Walter H. Clark, Jr. '54 to honor a former faculty member who conveyed to her students her love of German language and literature. The fund supports students participating in academic study, internships, and research fellowships in German speaking countries or in immersive German language programs.
- Eugene Weber Memorial Fund was established in honor of the late Eugene Weber, professor of German. The Weber Fund supports study abroad by students of German language and literature.
