As an Evans Scholar, Ernesto spent a summer in Otavalo, Ecuador at the Village Education Project (VEP) teaching english, math and soccer to indigenous children through a program founded by Katie Chamblee (Evans '07). He continues to serve on the Swarthmore committee that coordinates volunteers for VEP. Later that summer he traveled to Argentina and Brazil with the varsity soccer team. Ernesto spent the following summer in Ghana as a volunteer teacher with Global Volunteering Solutions. This past summer, Ernesto had an opportunity to explore another one of his interests by working as an assistant to a Swarthmore alum who has been researching genetic causes of disease in the Mennonite and Amish communities in Lancaster, PA. Ernesto enjoyed both the research and the patient contact.

In addition to having played varsity soccer for three years, Ernesto is involved with Swarthmore Salsa and led an effort to have Salsa offered to the Swarthmore community. He has also tutored Mexican student in Kennett Square through Club Despertar, a program founded by Linda Corchado, Evans '08. He is a talented acoustic guitarist and performs with the Swarthmore Mariachi Band at various campus events.
