Liangjun Shi, Voice

Award-winning Chinese tenor Dr. Liangjun Shi is a frequent recitalist and accomplished vocologist. He currently serves as an Instructor of Voice at Swarthmore College. As the founding President of the Mainland China Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (USA), he is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and strengthening the musical bridge between Mainland China and the United States. He has contributed as the translator of the Chinese edition of Your Voice: An Inside View 3 by Dr. Scott McCoy and as a recording artist for the textbook Bel Canto of China to be published by the People’s Music Publishing House nationwide in China. Experienced in the Western canon, Dr. Shi also maintains a dedication to advancing Chinese art songs and repertoire from other underrepresented cultures.

Dr. Shi has performed widely across China and the United States and has presented research and lectures at international conferences. His stage roles include Don  uixote/Cervantes in Man of La Mancha (dir. Joseph Graves), the Priest and Man in Armor in Die Zauberflöte (dir. Peer Boysen), Remendado in Carmen, and Wang Xuan in Coming for You: The Song of Wang Xuan (《为你而来·王选之歌》), among others. As a Singing Health Specialist and NCVS-trained Vocologist, Dr. Shi has observed surgical laryngology and clinical speech-language pathology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Actively engaged in current research, his recent presentations and appearances have included international professional events, such as the NATS National Conference (USA), the Voice Foundation Annual Symposium, the National Bel Canto of China Forum (Beijing, China), and the North Carolina Music Teachers Association Annual Conference. He has given invited lectures at the University of Maryland, The Ohio State University, Campbell University, and Peking University. 

Grounded in vocal health and in-depth artistry, Dr. Shi’s teaching helps students develop a systematic understanding of their voices through both scientific principles and artistic expression. His students have gone on to perform in Broadway productions and to work with such professional organizations as Opera Philadelphia, The Washington Chorus, The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, and Baltimore Choral Arts Society. His students have also been accepted into competitive programs at Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maryland, Oberlin College, Manhattan School of Music, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini Firenze (Italy), and Sichuan Conservatory of Music (China), among others.

Dr. Shi holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Pedagogy from the University of Maryland. His interdisciplinary training at The Ohio State University includes a Master of Arts in Voice Pedagogy, a Master of Music in Voice Performance, and a Singing Health Specialization. He completed a Vocology Certificate through the National Center for Voice and Speech and the University of Utah. His previous education also includes a Master of Fine Arts in Drama (Opera) from Peking University and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Chengdu University of Technology. His mentors include Scott McCoy, Carmen Balthrop, Delores Ziegler, and Ingo R. Titze.
