AP/IB Credit Policy

Students will receive a maximum of one credit after successful completion of a language course at Swarthmore, if their corresponding language AP score is 4 or 5, or if they achieved a score of 6 or 7 in the International Baccalaureate. Note that neither AP nor IB credits will be counted toward the major or minor in that language. 

AP and IB scores do not substitute for the placement test. Please refer to the specific language to take the corresponding placement test:

  • German Studies
  • Japanese
  • Russian

Once placed, register in the designated course during the registration period unless otherwise instructed. If you have concerns or questions regarding your placement, please consult the Section head of the specific language.

Language Media Lab

The Language Media Lab provides resources to enhance the study of foreign language, literature, and culture at Swarthmore College. Students have access to audio/video materials required for foreign language classes. The lab's resources include 12 Macbook Pros, 8 iMacs, an extensive library of foreign films, video cameras, and audio recorders. The space is a unique, adaptable, multimedia-friendly place to study, practice and develop language skills.
