She, A Chinese (2009, 103 minutes) Introduced by Guo with a Q&A following the screening
Guo’s bold feature debut follows an impassive young woman named Mei (Lu Huang) from East to West as she escapes her mountain village and negotiates the vicissitudes of globalization firsthand, including factory and sex work in Chongqing, and an exploitative marriage and a romance with a worker at an ethnic restaurant in London. By turns bluntly allegorical and flatly postmodern, She, A Chinese finds unique ways of probing the questions of gender and world citizenship that also animate Guo’s writing and documentary.
