Film & Media Studies Major - Screenwriting
- Why did you choose FMST as your major?
During my sophomore spring, I took Screenwriting with Erica Cho. I knew it was what I wanted to pursue, so I changed my entire sophomore plan around to become a Film and Media Studies major.
- What your focus is in FMST (film theory, production, or new media)?
My focus is screenwriting, which I will be pursuing at the Vancouver Film School next year.
- What did you feel was helpful to keep in mind during sophomore planning?
Embrace flexibility. Meeting with my advisor and discussing different options helped me with that.

Honors Film & Media Studies Major - Film Theory & New Media
- Why did you choose FMST as your major?
I have loved having the opportunity to study all different aspects of FMST, from film theory, to national cinema, to genre studies, to intersections of FMST and other departments, to new media and new media theories, and much more. I choose FMST because of the strong critical skills it helped me develop in terms of synthesizing and applying theoretical material to examples of film and media, the immense progress it has helped me make with my writing skills, and the wonderful support and mentorship I have received from the department. It's been a fantastic experience.
- What is your focus in FMST (film theory, production, or new media)?
My focus has been in film theory and new media, with an Honors focus on New Media and Reality Television, Convergence Theory, and European and Italian Cinema.
- Why did you choose to pursue honors?
I choose Honors because I wanted the chance to delve deeper into my courses and explore new areas of study, and to have the unique opportunity at the end of my senior year to have a conversation with experts in the field of FMST.
- What did you feel was helpful to keep in mind during sophomore planning?
Don't sweat it! It's not set in stone and it is very helpful to have at least an outline of how the next two years will go, so you don't have to scramble for classes every semester. If you want or need to change it though, you usually can with support from the Departments.
