Course Info

This course is an introduction to researching the indigenous languages of North America. We investigate techniques for figuring out how languages work.  We will see ways in which the grammars of these languages are significantly different from Indo-European languages and ways in which they are very similar.  We will study techniques of identifying language families and the effects of language contact.  We also look at efforts to revitalize languages in communities and look at intercultural interactions between language communities and language researchers.
