The TLC is hosting our third annual Summer of Learning (SoL), a series of meetups and workshops to foster lifelong learning, community, and creativity at Swarthmore. All staff, faculty, and students are welcome! Please read about our 2026 programming below and register to attend! 

In Summer 2024, the TLC hosted a “Summer of Learning" (SoL) workshop series, designed to build professional knowledge, practical skills, as well as community and creativity at Swarthmore. As an expansion of the Learning for Life program, these events were open to all staff, faculty and students.

Monthly Reading Group

Label: Discussions led by TLC staff

A summer reading group hosted by the Teaching and Learning Commons invites participants to explore one thoughtfully selected book each month. As part of the Summer of Learning program, the group meets once per book for an engaging, facilitated discussion that encourages reflection, connection, and the exchange of ideas across disciplines and positions on campus.

Pasta Making

Label: Workshop led by the DCC Chef Team

Join us for a hands-on pasta making workshop where you'll learn the art of crafting fresh, homemade pasta from scratch. Guided by an experienced chef, this fun and interactive session covers everything from mixing and kneading dough to rolling and shaping various pasta types like fettuccine, ravioli, and tagliatelle. Perfect for beginners and food enthusiasts alike, you'll leave with new skills, delicious recipes, and a taste of Italy to bring home. All materials and ingredients provided!

This workshop will be on Friday, June 5 from 1-3pm at the DCC's Teaching Kitchen.

Canning & Preservation Basics

Label: Workshop led by the DCC Chef Team

Discover safe, simple methods for preserving seasonal ingredients in this hands-on workshop covering the fundamentals of canning and food preservation. Learn essential techniques for water bath and basic preservation methods, proper sanitation, and how to store your homemade goods with confidence. Perfect for beginners, this class will help you extend the life of fresh produce while capturing peak flavor year-round.

This workshop will be on Friday, June 19 from 1-3pm at the DCC's Teaching Kitchen.

Birding for a Better World

Label: Workshop led by Katrina Clark & Nicole Seahorn Hameen

Katrina Clark and Nicole Seahorn Hameen will discuss how to lead accessible and inclusive nature walks in an ever-changing world and why it benefits everyone. As founding members of In Color Birding Club they will share small tricks and larger cultural shifts that can increase the number of people who keep showing up for green spaces and the natural world.

The workshop will be on Wednesday, June 24 from 9-10am, meeting at the bench by the DuPont Parking Lot across from Singer.

Container Gardening

Label: Workshop led by Sue MacQueen (Scott Arboretum)

Join Sue MacQueen, Scott Arboretum's Campus Engagement Coordinator, to make your own summer garden in a container.  Learn about plant palettes and pleasing color schemes.  All plants and soil will be provided but participants will have to provide their own 12x16 containers.  Limited to 18 attendees.

This workshop will be on Friday, June 26 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the TLC office (McCabe Library).

How to Make Hot Sauce

Label: Workshop led by the DCC Chef Team

Create your own signature hot sauce blend using peppers, aromatics, and spices in this hands-on hot sauce workshop. Learn how to balance heat, acidity, and flavor while exploring techniques like roasting, fermenting, and blending. Perfect for beginners and spice lovers alike, you’ll leave with a custom sauce and the skills to keep experimenting at home.

Drawing Foundations

Label: Workshop led by Mariel Capanna (Art)

This workshop provides a playful and exploratory introduction to the foundational elements of drawing through the practice of direct observation. Using a range of drawing tools, we’ll explore mark-making, line, value, shape, space, and gesture. Subjects of study will include the still life, the figure, and the landscape. No prior drawing experience is necessary.

Master quick, flavorful dishes perfect for busy schedules in this hands-on one-pan meals workshop. Learn how to combine proteins, vegetables, and grains into balanced dishes with minimal prep and cleanup. Perfect for weeknight cooking, this class will help you build confidence in creating satisfying meals using just a single pan.

Group Singing for Community

Label: Workshop led by Nathan Reiff (Music & Choirs)

Love to sing or interested in trying it out for the first time? This session is designed to be accessible to all lovers of music, regardless of experience level or ability. We'll explore the ways that singing with one another can help to bring us closer together, further the pursuit of social justice, and foster joy. We'll sing a variety of traditional and popular songs, including some from the Justice Choir Songbook. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the broader community (high school age or older) welcome—bring a singing friend or meet one here!
