Phi Beta Kappa Fellowships

Each year the Swarthmore Phi Beta Kappa chapter awards a one-year fellowship of $5,000 to one Phi Beta Kappa initiate in support of graduate study for the following year. This is normally intended to support a program which will lead to a career of scholarly research and teaching. The committee will consider applications that request support for a Masters if the application clearly indicates a path toward scholarly pursuits.  Any recent inductee who has firm plans to attend graduate school next year and who does not yet have full support (tuition plus housing and food) is eligible to apply for this fellowship.

Applicants should send a letter by July 15 to Krista Thomason, President, Phi Beta Kappa, Swarthmore College, 500 College Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081, outlining graduate school plans, the connection of the program to career goals, current financial arrangements (including notice of any fellowships or grants already obtained), and detailing financial need.

An inductee will be considered eligible for support for several years following graduation from Swarthmore College. The Phi Beta Kappa executive committee at Swarthmore will read and evaluate all letters of application and inform applicants of their decision around September 10.
