Whenever traveling abroad, students, faculty and staff who are U.S. citizens should register their travel using the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program - STEP. Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency. Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Non-U.S. citizens should see if their government provides a similar registration system.
In a crisis abroad, in addition to receiving email notices from the U.S. Embassy in your country, the State Department indicates that the best way to follow their notices and advice is to follow the Bureau of Consular Affairs and your local U.S. Embassy through twitter and Facebook.
Download Smart Traveler, the official State Department app for U.S. travelers. It provides easy access to frequently updated official country information, travel alerts, travel warnings, maps, U.S. embassy locations, and more. The Department of State provides a wealth of travel information. The consular information sheets contain important travel advice and detail risks to travelers and U.S. citizens in particular including transportation, water safety, and crime reports.
