Dean of Students Tomoko Sakomura has announced that Kristen Smith will join Swarthmore College as its next registrar on August 2. Smith brings extensive experience to the role from her previous positions at the New York Institute of Technology and Mills College.

The registrar provides strategic direction and oversight of the College’s registration policies and procedures and plays a critical role in the management of academic information and reporting systems. With a significant impact on the academic policies and processes that help see students through to their degrees, the registrar collaborates across the College to support faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and visitors. Smith will join Associate Registrar Usha Nair Jenemann and Assistant Registrars Jana Daly and Jenna Hunt in the Registrar’s Office.

"Kristen is an esteemed and proven collaborator who, in addition to deep experience and expertise in all aspects of the registrar’s area, has worked in academic affairs, enrollment services, and student affairs," says Sakomura. "Through collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, Kristen has created and implemented several student success initiatives that integrated academic and social support. We eagerly look forward to learning from her focus on expanding the use of technology to improve the student experience."

Smith holds a B.A. in English literature from Pace University, an M.A. in applied psychology in counseling education from New York University, and an M.A. and Ed.D. in education leadership from Mills College.
