Jia Kim Senior Exhibition 2011

Jia Kim '11, a biology and studio art major from Closter, N.J., has always been fascinated by architecture, especially, she says, by designs that "make your jaw drop" and "make you wonder for days." Combining her interest in human anatomy, fashion, and architecture, she recently presented her collection, “Skin and Bones,” in a packed List Gallery. "Each look from the collection is inspired by a particular architectural design," she says. "I was heavily influenced by architects Santiago Calatrava, Frank Gehry, and designer Thomas Heatherwick. For the fashion show, rather than creating a traditional catwalk runway, I experimented with having the models simply stroll through the space as if they were the buildings moving through the people." Her stated goal: "to unite not only the architectural forms with human mind, but also with the human body." This fall, Jia will join the graduate program in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
