First math class at Swarthmore: MATH 025 (Single-Variable Calculus II) with Professor Nakao

What was your favorite math class and why? STAT 021 (Statistical Methods II) with Professor Wang. Every week felt like a new opportunity to learn the applications of the topics covered in lecture, like creating an email spam filter using a logistic regression. The class also helped me question data and think carefully about the nuances that can result from statistical analysis.

Why did you become a math major? I am drawn to the problem-solving nature of mathematics, especially how a single problem can be approached in multiple ways. I also wanted to build confidence in preparing for the actuarial exams required for becoming an actuary.

How do you expect to use your mathematics after leaving Swarthmore? I plan to work as an actuary in the life, health, or retirement insurance sectors, where I can use my math/stats to assess and manage financial risk and uncertainty. While working full-time, I also intend to continue studying for and passing the remaining actuarial exams to earn my FSA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries) designation.

What advice do you have for an incoming student? Attend office hours. Not only do they provide opportunities to ask questions, but they also allow you to build relationships with professors and classmates that can benefit you in both your current and future math courses.

Anything you would like to share? If you’re looking for additional support beyond office hours, consider attending clinics and/or Pirate sessions. Both are led by students who have directly experienced the courses themselves and are open to providing explanations and guidance.
