The List Gallery, Swarthmore College, is pleased to present Creative Conversations, two concurrent exhibitions that celebrate the art, influence, and collaborative projects of the Philadelphia-based artist and printmaker Cindi Ettinger. Recent Collages by Cindi Ettinger, the artist’s first solo exhibition, will be presented concurrently with Selected Prints from C.R. Ettinger Studio, an exhibition that highlights the transformative experimentation and growth that artists have experienced through working with her. The exhibitions will be on view November 5 – December 14, 2025. Ettinger will give a talk about her work and discuss several collaborations with Daniel Heyman on Thursday, November 6, 4:30-5:30 PM in the Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema. An opening reception will follow in the List Gallery: 5:30–7:00 PM. A closing reception will take place on Sunday, December 14, 3:00–5:00 PM.

During the past 45 years, Ettinger has earned recognition for her expertise in intaglio and relief print processes. She has printed editions for more than 100 artists, many of whom travel nationally or internationally to work with her. She is less well-known for her independent creative practice, which explores the evocative resonance of printed matter, including maps, music scores, and antique books.

Curated by Andrea Packard, Creative Conversations showcases varied approaches to printmaking and features works by notable artists, including Astrid Bowlby, Don O. Colley, Danielle Dimston, Dufala Brothers, Nancy Hellebrand, Daniel Heyman, Virgil Marti, Sarah McEneaney, Judith Schaechter, Bill Scott, Mike Stack, and Didier William. Some of the represented artists, including Judith Schaechter and the Dufala Brothers, created a single print with Ettinger, while others have made multiple editions and relied on her expertise to explore new processes. Throughout each collaboration, Ettinger facilitates an experimental process that helps each artist explore new perspectives, solutions, or processes.

Cindi Royce Ettinger was born in 1956 and raised in Rosyln, New York. She enrolled at the Philadelphia College of Art (later known as the University of the Arts), intending to study painting, but soon changed her major to printmaking, earning her BA in 1978. After graduating, Ettinger moved to Port Washington, NewYork, where she established a print studio with a classmate, K.C. Wilsey. After mastering a variety of intaglio processes, she returned to Philadelphia in search of new opportunities to collaborate and established C.R. Ettinger Studio in 1982. During the next 32 years, Ettinger focused on editioning prints for other artists while also raising a daughter and stepdaughter, and she found little time to pursue her own creative practice. That changed in 2014, when she co-organized and participated in Due North, an exhibition curated by Marianne Bernstein and presented at the Crane Arts Building, Philadelphia. Due North organizers invited Ettinger and other artists from the U.S. and abroad to travel to Iceland and to reimagine the notion of North. This experience, and related collaborations, re-ignited Ettinger's passion for creating her own prints and collages. Ettinger has co-organized and participated in numerous exhibitions in Philadelphia and Delaware, including Selections from C.R. Ettinger Studio at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (2014); C.R. Ettinger Studio Recent Editions at the Hamilton Building, University of the Arts (2014); Pressure Points at Savery Gallery (2015); Due South, at The Delaware Contemporary (2017); and ReMap, at Artspace 1241 (2024). During the past 12 years, she has curated and hosted more than 30 exhibitions at C.R. Ettinger Studio Gallery, highlighting works by diverse artists, including Tom Burckhardt, José Ortiz-Pagán, Bo Bartlett, Francesco Clemente, and Josias Figueirido.
