Faculty Publications 2025
In 2025, Swarthmore faculty produced an astonishing 266 publications. This includes 157 peer-reviewed articles, 44 book chapters, and 15 books. Nearly 150 faculty members and academic staff, across all departments and most programs, contributed to this effort, which was shared equally by scholars in the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. Almost 100 works were published open access, with an additional 30 freely accessible publications.
Open access publishing makes research output more accessible by removing paywalls and other costs for readers. However, open access publishing still has its costs to the publisher that are not being recouped through subscription revenue; as such, many publishers charge authors an article processing charge (APC) for open access publication. Swarthmore College Libraries was able to offset costs for 17 of our faculty authors through our existing agreements with publishers. An additional 22 works were published open access at no cost to the authors through initiatives such as Subscribe to Open, “diamond” open access journals, and other avenues.
