Summer Study Abroad

While there is no official study abroad programming during the summer, at the Global Engagement Office we are always happy to talk to you about your options! Certain Departments have endorsed summer programs. Please check the Department of Spanish for recommendations for summer programs in Spain and Latin America.

There are different ways to search for summer programs. Most programs we partner with offer summer programs; you can also use look for programs on websites such as studyabroad.com, goabroad.com, or iiepassport.org

Funding

Funding for summer opportunities is available through different Swarthmore Offices - consult this website to check out all the funding opportunities. You can filter specifically for "study abroad" - but note that some grants are for specifically outlined purposes, so while study abroad may be part of it, you need to carefully review and should check with the funding office.

Funding is also offered by third party study abroad programs, and outside funding options. Check out the Money Matters page for more information about funding. Scroll down on the page for links to many external study abroad scholarships, as well as study abroad scholarship databases.

Academic credit for Summer Programs

If you want to request credit from summer study abroad, consult the Transfer Credit page, as well as your departmental website.

Summer Research

Many students apply for summer research grants to pursue research abroad primarily during the summer between the junior and senior years. Students may submit proposals for field research, internships, archival research, creative arts, work in preparation or research leading to thesis preparation or honors preparation, faculty-student collaborative research, and independent research.  Under certain circumstances, students seeking special training and mentorship, or volunteer opportunities may qualify for a grant. Students work with a faculty sponsor as part of the application process. Click here for more information about summer research.
