Swarthmore was recently named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. Administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the honor roll is the highest federal distinction a college or university can earn for public service.

The College was also recognized this month for its sustainability efforts. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education cited Swarthmore, a nationally-designated arboretum, for its LEED-Certified Science Center, 5,000 square feet of green roof, and two recently constructed environmentally friendly residence halls. The AASHE also noted that 40 percent of the College's energy supply is provided by wind power.
