2009 marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first astronomical use of the telescope and it is being celebrated around the world as the International Year of Astronomy. Associate Professor of Astronomy David Cohen recently reflected on the impact of Galileo's work during an interview with WHYY News: "When Galileo saw the four moons of Jupiter, which clearly orbited around the planet Jupiter, just the very simple fact of this observation convinced a lot of people in the early 16oo's that not everything orbits the earth."

Swarthmore College is celebrating the International Year of Astronomy with a series of talks and public telescope viewings. Events are scheduled every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. from October 20 through November 24, 2009 at the Peter van de Kamp Observatory on the roof of the Swarthmore College Science Center. more
