Nick Gaw '09, a history and linguistics major from Wildwood, Mo., is the new executive director of STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition of over 1,000 high school and colleges, in an appointment that was announced last week.  This past year, Gaw served as STAND's Mid-Atlantic Regional Outreach Coordinator.

"Over the last several years, STAND has come to represent campus activism against both the ongoing genocide in Darfur and wherever genocide appears," Gaw says.  "In the coming year, I hope to broaden our coalition and deepen its impact. As students, we are in a unique position to learn about the world that we are inheriting from those generations before us, and to use that knowledge to shape its future. It inspires me to see the dedication and the passion that so many students have for fighting genocide. I am eager to work on their behalf."

STAND, formerly known as "Students Taking Action Now: Darfur," formed in 2004 in response to the atrocities taking place in Darfur.  After joining forces with the  Genocide Intervention Network in 2005,  the organizations now work in partnership to establish a permanent anti-genocide constituency that holds elected officials accountable for doing all that they can to prevent and end genocide.
