Alex Lerner '09, a mathematics and economics major from River Vale, NJ, took first place - and the $5000 prize purse -  at a national Guitar Hero II tournament recently held in Los Angeles.  The event, whose judges included Motley Crüe's Vince Neil, required contestants to perform complicated songs on a guitar-shaped game controller set on the hardest difficulty.

"Judges rate things like your stage presence, tricks, and crowd control, so you'll get people who play with their teeth, behind their back, blindfolded, or while doing a backflip," Alex says. "Before this event, I had come in fourth place and then in second place. But I think I really stepped it up in L.A. when I let loose my newest trick and played with my feet while signing autographs with my freed-up hands. Surprisingly, the crowd really loved it."
