Swarthmore's Gamelan Semara Santi to Present
Spring Concert Featuring Topeng Master Dibia

 

The Swarthmore College Gamelan Semara Santi will present its spring concert of music and dance from Bali, Indonesia, with special guest, Topeng Master I Wayan Dibia, on Sunday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Scott Amphitheater at Swarthmore.

Professor Dibia is one of the world's leading scholar-performers of the performing arts in Bali and a master of Topeng, Balinese masked dance/theater. He will also give a Topeng workshop on Saturday, April 14, and members of the Gamelan Semara Santi will give a hands-on demonstration of Gamelan music preceding the concert on Sunday.

These events are sponsored by the William J. Cooper Foundation and are free and open to the public.

Workshop, demonstration, and concert schedule:

  • Saturday, April 14, 4-5:30 p.m. Lang Music Building, Room 407. Workshop in Topeng (masked dance and theater techniques) by I Wayan Dibia.
  • Sunday, April 15, 3 p.m. Lang Concert Hall. (The change in venue as of 4/13 is in anticipation of the windy, rainy weather expected this weekend.) Hands-on demonstration of Gamelan music by Swarthmore Professor Tom Whitman '82 and musicians of Gamelan Semara Santi. Children and adults are welcome to participate and learn to play.
  • Sunday, April 15, 3:30 p.m. Lang Concert Hall. (The change in venue as of 4/13 is in anticipation of the windy, rainy weather expected this weekend.) Spring Concert of Gamelan Semara Santi with special guest, Topeng Master I Wayan Dibia. Co-directed by Ni Luh Kadek Kusuma Dewi, I Nyoman Suadin, and Thomas Whitman '82.
