Garnet Weekend 2019

Department Overview

Beautiful autumn weather welcomed alumni, families of current students, and volunteers to campus for the 2019 Garnet Weekend, Oct. 4–5. Visitors enjoyed a full schedule of events including open houses, tours, workshops, faculty lectures from Isaac H. Clothier, Jr. Professor of Biology Amy Cheng Vollmer and Assistant Professor of Economics Syon Bhanot; and perennial favorites such as the Garnet Weekend Tailgate and the President’s Reception.

Spelman College President Mary Schmidt Campbell ’69, H’09 gave this year’s McCabe Lecture, “Education: The New Civil Rights? What is the Role of America’s Colleges and Universities in Expanding Access to Educational Excellence?” In her talk, President Campbell spoke about the work Spelman is doing in Atlanta to increase literacy in 5th, 6th, and 7th graders, and how liberal arts colleges can do more to support nontraditional students. Her talk was also part of the College's Celebrating Black Excellence programming.

The eighth Garnet Athletics Hall of Fame class, composed of George "Moose" Earnshaw '23, Ruff Herndon, the 1974 men's soccer team, Michelle Walsh '98, Cathy Polinsky '99, and Caitlin Mullarkey '09, was inducted on Friday evening.
Volunteers from Alumni Council, Alumni of Color Steering Committee, Council on Presidential Initiatives, Garnet Club Advancement Council, LGBTQ+ Steering Committee, Reunion Committees, Swarthmore Black Alumni Network Executive Committee, and the Young Alumni Ambassadors Program also came to campus for the annual Advancement Volunteer Summit.
