THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT QUIZ

The correct response to Question #8 is : FALSE

The fact that those who hear the remark laugh or respond favorably at the time does not mean the conduct isn't offensive and inappropriate for the workplace.

BUT... you do not have to wait until there's a threat of a complaint to know whether your comments are potentially offensive. Use this "litmus test" to ask yourself:

  • Is the comment or action of a sexual nature or derogatory to a protected class?
  • Is the comment or action welcomed by all who might hear it, whether they are an intended recipient or not? (When at work, always assume you are speaking to a room full of community members.)
  • Would I say or do this if I knew I were being recorded?

If the answer is no to any of these questions, then don't say or do it. It's better to play it safe now than to be very sorry later!
