Brief Bio for Kathleen Howard
Kathleen P. Howard
Edward Hicks Magill Professor of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Dr. Kathleen Howard joined the Swarthmore faculty in 1997, where she balances a deep commitment to undergraduate chemical education, cutting-edge research, and institutional leadership. She currently serves as the Edward Hicks Magill Professor of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and recently completed a term as Acting Provost and Dean of the Faculty (2024–2025).
Research & Mentorship
Dr. Howard leads an active, externally funded research program focused on the properties of molecules embedded in biomembranes. Her lab utilizes a range of biophysical techniques with a focus on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A hallmark of her lab is the professional development of her students; most go on to premier graduate programs, frequently supported by competitive national fellowships. Her work has been continuously funded for over 25 years by the NIH, NSF, and the Dreyfus Foundation.
Teaching & Outreach
Her teaching spans the chemistry curriculum, from introductory courses to advanced offerings in physical and biophysical chemistry. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Howard is an enthusiastic advocate for public science outreach and has a long-term commitment to a summer science program for middle school students from under-resourced districts.
