Benjamin Mays served as spiritual and intellectual mentor to civil rights activists Martin Luther King, Jr., Marion Wright Edelman, and Julian Bond.

Randal Jelks, author of Benjamin Elijah Mays: A Religious Rebel in the Jim Crow South (forthcoming), will discuss Mays' ideas about the liberal arts tradition in higher education and its meaning in achieving social justice and a more democratic society.
