Chester Children's Chorus Fills Summer with Science, Songs, and Surfin'

Each summer, the Swarthmore College campus is filled with the sound of young voices, laughter, and learning, thanks to the Chester Children’s Chorus (CCC).

A program of Swarthmore College, the CCC is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round music and math education to children and youth, ages 7 to 18, from Chester, Pa.

Founded and led by Executive and Artistic Director John Alston H'15, the CCC offers a transformative experience for its participants. During the academic year, students hone their vocal skills through weekly rehearsals and public performances, while also strengthening their math abilities through small group and individualized instruction.

In the summer, the program expands into a full-day, five-week learning experience, immersing students in a dynamic mix of music, math, science, art, dance, and community-building activities, all on Swarthmore’s scenic campus.

“For five weeks every summer, Swarthmore College becomes a second home for our children,” says Alston. “Surrounded by care, encouragement, and possibility, they spend their days singing, learning, growing, laughing, and building friendships. The children love CCC summers on campus, where they feel seen, supported, and inspired.”

This summer’s programming culminated in the final week of July with the Liz Vallen Science for Kids Poster Session, showcasing the students' hard work throughout the program, and the always-popular concert series. Titled Channel Surfin’, this year’s concert featured lively renditions of classic television theme songs and was held on July 24, 26, and 27. The performances brought together families, alumni, and community members for a joyful celebration of creativity and talent.
