Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy Brian Zanger recently published a paper in the American Journal of Physics, recognized as an Editor’s Choice, examining the use of oral exams in upper-level courses at liberal arts colleges.

Though uncommon in undergraduate physics, oral exams more closely reflect how scientists are evaluated in practice, from conference presentations to interviews. Drawing on his experience at previous institutions, Zanger has introduced the approach in two Swarthmore courses this year, with plans to expand it.
