Assistant Professor of History Elise Mitchell wins "Honorable Mention" for the 2024 Nursing Clio Prize for Best Journal Article for her article, “The ‘Practitioner of Physick and Surgery’ and the Enslaved ‘Doctor’: Medicine, Slavery, Race, and Patriarchy in the Eighteenth-Century Jamaica,” published by The Journal of Irish and Scottish Studies. In the article, Mitchell discusses a Scottish doctor, Alexander Johnson, and Galen, a man Johnson enslaved as a medical practitioner in Jamaica in the 1700s.
