Presidential Search Update (October 20)

Dear Members of the Swarthmore Community,

With the fall semester well underway, we are writing with a brief update on the search for Swarthmore’s next president.

We’re pleased to report that the search is going well. The committee is actively interviewing candidates, and we remain on track with our original timeline.

Most importantly, the search process — including the interviews — has shown just how highly Swarthmore is regarded. At a moment when higher education is under pressure from multiple forces, the College is seen as offering the platform and intellectual credibility to help shape the future of a liberal arts education. We can all be proud of the place we occupy, achieved through the work and scholarship of every member of this community.

As we move through the interviews, the priorities we heard from you during listening sessions and via the campus survey continue to guide our work. The search committee is assessing candidates’ academic and leadership experience, their grasp of Swarthmore’s distinctive DNA, and their capacity to seize the opportunities and address the challenges ahead. We look forward to continuing to update you, while protecting the confidentiality necessary to attract the best candidates.

We are honored by the trust you have placed in us as we enter the final months of this important work. Please reach out to us at presidentsearch@swarthmore.edu with any questions or comments.

Warmly,

Cindi Leive ’88 and Gus Schwed ’84, co-chairs, on behalf of the Presidential Search Committee
