Jason Hartwig is a Visiting Assistant Professor in Political Science at Swarthmore College. His research focuses on armed conflict, identity, intervention, and state-building with an emphasis on the micro-foundations of conflict and governance. His book project examines the construction of security orders during civil wars and the interaction between combatant territorial control and social cohesion of communities to manage communal violence. His research examining the unintended consequences of intervention in Somalia and communal violence has been published in the Journal of Peace Research.
 
Jason received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and additionally holds an MA in Security Studies from Georgetown University and a B.A. in History from Dartmouth College. Prior to entering his PhD training, Jason served as an armor officer in the U.S. Army and in civilian security sector reform positions with extensive fieldwork in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
